Netflix is coming to the Wii!

Hold onto your hats, Netflix is coming to the Wii!

Finally, owners of Nintendo’s incredibly popular Wii gaming console have coming to them something that both XBox 360 and PS3 users have had access to for some time.

Despite the technical limitations of the Wii (480i screen resolution, which is clearly not HD), the advent of the ability to watch Netflix on the Wii will prove to be a match made in heaven.

Nintendo has been on a winner with the Wii since it’s initial debut. Far outselling both Microsoft’s XBox 360 and Sony’s PS3 as a result of the more family friendly game catalog, and the lower price point. Netflix will now be putting itself in front of an audience of tens of millions of potential new customers.

Nintendo will prove to be big winners from this deal too. By adding Netflix’s vast catalog of streaming video content to the huge library of games available for the Wii, The Wii will place itself fair and square in the minds of potential game console purchasers.

The question most people are raising in relation to the announcement that Wii owners will be able to stream Netflix to their TV’s is about the fact that the Wii lags behind the Xbox 360 and PS3 in its inability to show HD content.

Personally, I don’t see this as much of an issue. As a Wii owner myself, I’ll be champing at the bit to get my fix of streaming Netflix on my Wii. HD or not, the availability of this content is a huge boon.

Keep your eyes out too, this announcement may just be the precursor to a Nintendo announcement of a Full HD Wii.

Just imagine, Sonic the hedgehog in full HD. The mind boggles!
